competitive league faq

Q: What is the process for joining the WJBB Competitive League?
A: Competitive league is open to players 8-14 years old; players can play by age (age on April 30) or by grade. Registration for the upcoming Competitive League season typically opens in August. Please register before Skill Evaluations, which are held in September or October each year. These skill evaluations are mandatory for players wanting to compete at this level. We encourage all players who will be 8 yrs old on April 30, 2025 to participate in Skill Evaluations, regardless if they intend to play 8U Competitive or 8U Rec. Results are provided to approved coaches for draft purposes starting in mid to late October. Team formations should be finalized in early November. If your player is not offered a spot on a team, you will receive a full refund.
Q: Can both girls and boys play in this league?
A: Yes. Both boys and girls are welcome at all levels of play with West Jeff Baseball (Recreational League: 4-8 years old and Competitive League: 8-14 years old).
Q: What equipment will my child need to play Competitive league baseball?
A: Your child will need a pair of cleats, a glove, and an athletic cup for boys. Heart guards are optional. There are some team bats, but for best player performance, it's wise to determine the optimum length and weight of a bat for your player and purchase accordingly. Batting helmets will be provided to each team by WJBB, along with catcher's gear.
Q: Will my child be provided a uniform?
A: In the Competitive program, uniforms are separate from registration fees. You will order your player uniform, hat, and fan gear through our uniform vendor. Ordering information will be provided by the league prior to each season.
Q: Who will coach my child's team?
A: Coaches and Assistant Coaches for both our Recreational (4-8) and Competitive (8-14) Leagues are volunteers, and are typically parents of players.
Q: Can I become a coach?
A: All parents are encouraged to apply for a coaching position if you:
  1. Have knowledge of the game
  2. Can make a commitment to a team for approximately 10 to 12 weeks
  3. Have a desire to help all children learn and succeed
You can make a difference in supporting youth baseball in our mountain communities. Please see the coaching section of this website for more details and expectations. Apply to coach when you register your player. All coaches undergo a background check, and do first aid and concussion training.
Q: What are the rules for Competitive league?
A: In addition to WJBB Rules and Regulations, our program also subscribes to the rules of our parent league, RMJBL. Find RMJBL rules here:  https://dt5602vnjxv0c.cloudfront.net/portals/29598/docs/rmjbl%20league%20rules%20summary.pdf   USSSA's current rules can be found here: http://www.usssa.com/docs/2021/usssa_bb_rules_2021.pdf
Q: Can my child play with their friends?
A: West Jeff Baseball Competitive League has a skill evaluation/tryout process each September or October, from which players are drafted to teams in mid to late October. Aside from "Neighborhood" teams, which can draft players from a specific community/area, all other teams consist of players who are drafted based on skill and the needs of the team/coach doing the drafting.
Q: What school areas are part of West Jeff Baseball?
A: Bergen Meadow and Bergen Valley Elementary, Wilmot Elementary, Marshdale Elementary, Parmalee Elementary, West Jeff Elementary, Elk Creek Elementary, Evergreen Country Day School, King Murphy Elementary, Ralston Elementary, Rocky Mountain Academy, Evergreen Academy, Montessori schools
Q: Where are practices and games held?
A: Practices are held at a variety of local fields, typically twice a week; coaches choose the day and time for their individual teams. Games are held on week nights. Half the games will be Home games and played on Evergreen area fields. Away games are held at the fields of one of our competitor associations down the hill.
Q: How often do the teams practice?
A: Teams at the Competitive League level typically practice twice per week; practice days and times are decided by coaches, with input from their team's parents when possible.
Q: How long does the season run?
A: Each coach will determine when to start their team's practices. Some coaches ask their teams to invest in indoor practices in January-February before the outdoor fields open. Teams can start outdoor practices once weather permits. Games begin early April for 8-13 yr olds and run through June; the season begins mid-March for 14 yr olds and ends by mid-May so these players can pursue high school baseball opportunities. Families are asked to let coaches know ASAP about any games they will miss. We request that all families who sign up for Competitive league finish out their season; those who who don't finish out the season put their teammates at risk of forfeiting games for lack of enough players.
Q: Can my child play on the same team with the same coach each year?
A: You have an opportunity to make that request during your registration process each year. This request will be included with your tryout data that is given to coaches for draft nights. However, as the Competitive league is based on player skill, there are no team placement guarantees.
Q: Who do I contact to find out more about becoming a volunteer for West Jeff Baseball?
A: Please email westjeffgm@gmail.com.
